5 Detroit-Area Restaurant Closures to Know

The year 2024 is coming to a close and with that, several food and drink establishments in metro Detroit have announced that they’ll be ending the year by closing. Recent shutters in and around town include a number of beloved establishments, including a Hamtramck cafe and gallery, a Black woman-owned wine shop downtown, a longtime beer and burger spot in Ferndale. December 2024 HAMTRAMCK — Oloman Cafe (10215 Joseph Campau Avenue, Hamtramck), the coffee shop and art gallery founded in 2016 by photographer Zlatan Sadikovic, is closing permanently on Saturday, December 21. The cafe made the announcement on Facebook on Tuesday, December 17, with ownership saying they’re looking forward to retirement. DOWNTOWN — House of Pure Vin (1433 Woodward Avenue), the Black woman-owned downtown wine shop and tasting room, is closing its doors for good on Friday, December 27 following a nine-year run. Citing a recent newsletter published by the shop, Crain’s Detroit noted that space’s impact downtown, writing “House of Pure Vin has been more than a wine shop. It has been a home for connection, culture, and celebration. Together, we’ve created unforgettable memories, and none of it would have been possible without your love and support.” In addition to selling bottles for retail, the spot — owned by Regina Gaines — regularly hosted DJ sets, brunches, and other special events for the downtown crowd. CASS CORRIDOR — 8 Degrees Plato (3409 Cass Avenue), the Cass Corridor bottle shop and bar, will serve its last customers on Tuesday, December 31. For nearly a decade, Detroit beer fans had a spacious haven for beers on tap, growler fills, hard-to-find selections, and an annual chili cook-off when 8 Degrees Plato flung open its doors. Owners Brigid Beaubien and Tim Costello shared the news via social media that they’re looking forward to whatever the next chapter has in store for them. The space opened in 2018, giving Detroiters a dedicated place where folks looking for charcuterie board supplies could find all the gourmet ingredients in one spot. According to a social media post published on Friday, December 13, a similar concept should replace Monger’s in early 2025. FERNDALE — The Emory (22700 Woodward Avenue, Ferndale), the longtime Ferndale destination for craft beers and burgers, is closing permanently on Tuesday, December 31 following close to an 18-year run. The spot was considered a sibling business to Woodward Avenue Brewers and the Loving Touch, both across the street from the establishment. According to a social media post announcing the closure, service will continue Friday, Saturday, and Sunday through the end of December.
