When the Power Went Out, This Detroit Restaurant Donated Its Food to Local Charity

When a power surge forced the Block in Midtown to close suddenly on Mother’s Day, the ownership behind the popular brunch spot decided not to let the grits, chicken wings, and other favorite menu items prepared for the day to go to waste. Owner Stephanie Byrd told WDIV that when she learned that she would have to close the restaurant on one of the biggest brunch days of the year on Sunday, she choose to donate the unused food (which she estimated cost between $5,000 and $6,000) to Food Rescue US-Detroit, a nonprofit that transfers excess fresh food from restaurants and other food businesses to social service agencies focused on addressing food insecurity. Last Chance Kitchen Chef Sarah Welch has earned a second shot to resume competing in Bravo’s Top Chef Houston, several weeks after getting eliminated and sent to Last Chance Kitchen. Welch, who helms the Eater award-winning Marrow in West Village, made her way back to the main competition after clinching the win in last week’s finale of Last Chance Kitchen, following a winning streak in which she leaned in on familiar go-to dishes from her restaurant for inspiration. Pizza Cat, a Toledo-based chain that promises to “keep pizza weird,” could open as soon as next month as Pizza Cat Max, the Detroit News reports. While the old-school arcade games Ready Player One was known for will be gone, co-owner Andre Robinson Pizza Cat will have video game options on flat screen televisions, as well as customizable pizzas, specialties like “Trapper’s Alley” — made up like a coney dog, and a full bar.
